WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Jackie Walorski (IN-02), a member of the House Budget Committee, today spoke on the House floor in support of the House Budget Resolution for Fiscal Year 2014, H. Con. Res. 25. Last week, the House Budget Committee passed a resolution to balance the federal budget in 10 years, spur economic growth, and create more jobs.
“Today, we are not talking about balancing a budget for the sake of balancing a budget.
“The goal is not to check a box, what we are discussing is about more than a just budget.
“We are debating the kind of future we believe we should leave our children.
“The choice before us today is clear.
“If Congress does not get its spending under control our nation faces a debt crisis that will only make our fiscal situation worse.
“House Republicans recognized the urgency of the situation, and we acted.
“I am proud to have worked with my colleagues to produce a budget that makes responsible reforms and promotes economic growth and job creation.
“The House budget balances in ten years and gets our nation back on track.
“The Democrats budget doesn’t balance at all within CBO’s budget window and includes $1.2 trillion in tax increases.
“Our budget reforms the tax code and lowers taxes for everyone.
“Hardworking Hoosier families sit around their kitchen tables and make tough choices to keep a budget.
“Our households and businesses work hard to live within their means, and the federal government should, too.
“The basic principle of keeping budgets is important to all American families.
“When I am home in the Second District, I hear from moms in the grocery store who are worried about the rising cost of a carton or eggs and a gallon of milk.
“Parents are concerned about their children’s futures:
“Will they be able to save for college?
“Or find a job when they enter the workforce?
“The truth is: the uncertainty in Washington burdens our families at home.
“It is time for Washington to be held accountable and pass a responsible budget.
“According to Stanford University economists, our budget would result in $1500 more for each household by 2014 and $4000 more for each household by 2024.
“Our budget includes common sense policies that will spur investment and job creation and roll back regulations that hurt businesses and stifle economic growth.
“History will judge us by the future we leave to our children.
“If we refuse to make responsible, serious decisions about our budget, we will jeopardize the American dream for future generations.
“We must ensure that our children have the same, if not better, opportunities than we had to succeed.
“I urge my colleagues to make the responsible decision to support this budget and provide a brighter future for our children.
“Thank you and I yield back the balance of the time.”
