PERU, IN – Congresswoman Jackie Walorski today toured the city of Peru with Mayor Jim Walker after severe thunderstorms and a tornado hit northern Indiana on Wednesday. The storm damaged businesses, homes, and crops in parts of Miami County, causing thousands of power outages.
“My heart goes out to Hoosier families and businesses affected by this horrific storm,” said Walorski. “Thanks to the tireless efforts of city officials, first responders, and volunteers, I am confident Miami County will remain on the fast track to recovery. As the extent of damage is assessed, I will continue to closely monitor recovery efforts and offer assistance until restoration is complete.”
Walorski visited numerous damaged areas of the city with Mayor Walker, particularly on the west side of Peru and at the city park, where cleanup efforts are already underway.
“I appreciate Congresswoman Walorski touring Peru today to reach out to Hoosiers and take a firsthand look at the damage. During this difficult time, it is important to have the support of our elected officials and community leaders to execute a swift recovery for our communities,” said Peru Mayor Jim Walker.
The National Weather Service confirmed Thursday that the city of Peru was hit by an EF-1 tornado, with estimated wind speeds of 95 mph. The extent of damage is still under investigation by local authorities.
