Walorski Champions Pathway from Welfare to Work

TANF Reform Would Uphold Dignity of Work and Unlock American Dream for Families

WASHINGTON – U.S. Rep. Jackie Walorski (R-Ind.), the top Republican of the House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Worker and Family Support, today championed ongoing efforts to renew Americans’ pathway from poverty to prosperity through pro-growth, pro-work welfare reform.

“The dignity of work is the key to uplifting families from poverty to prosperity. While Democrats want to keep paying Americans to stay home, Republicans are putting forth pro-work, pro-growth solutions that help individuals find and keep family-sustaining jobs,” Congresswoman Walorski said. “To end the cycle of poverty, we cannot keep sending checks without human connection. Case management is the key to addressing the underlying issues that perpetuate barriers to work, and we must continue to invest in workers and equip families to succeed.”

BACKGROUND

This week, Ranking Member Kevin Brady (R-Texas) and Republicans on the Ways and Means Committee reintroduced the Jobs and Opportunity with Benefits and Services (JOBS) for Success Act, which would reform the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program by strengthening accountability and promoting measurable work outcomes, addressing the underlying barriers to work and equipping families to succeed.

During a Republican discussion on these reform efforts, “Building on Welfare Reform’s Success: Lifting Americans Out of Poverty Through Opportunity and Work,” Rep. Walorski highlighted the JOBS for Success Act and emphasized the importance of effective case management. Watch her remarks here.

Additionally, Congresswoman Walorski introduced H.R. 4543, the Coordinating Assistance for TANF Recipients Act, this week to allow states to test methods of coordinating case management between multiple programs for individuals and families who receive TANF benefits.

This summer marks the 25th anniversary of the landmark 1996 welfare reform passed by Congress, which created the TANF program.

Walorski represents the 2nd Congressional District of Indiana, serving as a member of the House Ways and Means Committee and the Ranking Member of the House Ethics Committee.
