Walorski Applauds Overturning of Obama Abortion Funding Rule
President Trump Signs H.J. Res. 43 to Stop Forcing States to Direct Federal Funds to Abortion Providers
MISHAWAKA, Ind. – U.S. Rep. Jackie Walorski (R-Ind.) today released the following statement after President Trump signed H.J. Res. 43, overturning an Obama administration rule forcing states to administer Title X funding to abortion providers:
“This is an important pro-life victory and a key step toward protecting women’s health and preventing the use of taxpayer dollars to fund abortion. The measure President Trump just signed into law will allow states to direct federal funding to community health centers and family health clinics that protect life instead of to abortion providers like Planned Parenthood. It’s just common sense that states know the needs of their communities better than Washington bureaucrats do.”
H.J. Res. 43, a resolution of disapproval under the Congressional Review Act, passed the House on February 16 by a vote of 230 to 188. Congresswoman Walorski spoke in support of the measure on the House floor ahead of the vote. Video of her remarks is available here.
The Obama administration rule, finalized in December 2016 by the Department of Health and Human Services, would have prohibited states from withholding Title X funds from health care providers that perform abortions.
Overturning the rule does not reduce funding for Title X family planning grants but gives states the discretion to redirect the funds to community health centers and other providers that do not perform abortions.
Walorski represents the 2nd Congressional District of Indiana, serving as a member of the House Ways and Means Committee.
