WALORSKI AMENDMENT BLOCKS FUNDS FOR GTMO DETAINEE TRANSFER TO YEMEN

Jul 24, 2013
Press Release

WASHINGTON, D.C. – As part of the Department of Defense Appropriations Bill (H.R. 2397), the House today passed an amendment offered by Congresswoman Jackie Walorski (IN-02) to prohibit funds for the transfer of Guantanamo detainees to Yemen.

“Released Guantanamo detainees are reengaging in acts of terrorism, plotting attacks to kill our troops and innocent civilians,” said Walorski, a member of the House Armed Services Committee.  “This amendment blocks funding for detainee transfers to Yemen to ensure taxpayer dollars are not wrongfully used to return the world’s most dangerous terrorists to the Arabian Peninsula, where Al Qaeda activity continues to be a serious national security threat.”

Walorski offered a related amendment adopted during consideration of the House-version fiscal year 2014 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), prohibiting the Secretary of Defense from using funds to authorize the transfer or release of Guantanamo detainees to Yemen.  According to the most recent Defense Intelligence Agency report, almost 30% of former Guantanamo detainees were suspected or confirmed of terrorist reengagement.
